“Seas the Day” by Jill Brown —
“Mermaids are known for their beauty of strength, but even mermaids have their battles. Mermaids weather the storms just like people receiving a cancer diagnosis.
Your life goes into chaos just like the churning sea with life altering decisions, surgeries and treatments. When the sea finally calms, you're usually left with physical, mental and emotional scars. The ocean helped me so much after my diagnosis. It's my happy place where I can be a mermaid. Fish don't care if I have boobs. Turtles don't care about scars. An octopus doesn't care if I have hair. The ocean is a place where you can just be; no more, no less. Tomorrow isn't promised so
Seas the Day!”

Out of the Woods by Sandra I. Davenhall“A friend of mine for 50+ years went in 2023 for her annual mammogram screening and two cancerous tumors were discovered in her breast. A lumpectomy was not possible, so her left breast was removed. She is still experiencing problems with lymph nodes, so is not “out of the woods”. I created this piece in honor of her, as I am hoping she will soon leave the “forest” behind.”(Ricardo Ramirez Buxeda/ Orlando Sentinel)
